A New Opera Coming in 2027

Highlighting the resilience of the Uvalde, Texas, community, For the Love of Uvalde is dedicated to remembering the nineteen students and two teachers who lost their lives in the Robb Elementary School shooting. Texas native Ayvaunn Penn (Columbia University Playwriting Dean’s Fellow) wrote the heartfelt original stage play For the Love of Uvalde following the tragedy that took place on May 24, 2022. By invitation, excerpts of the script are entered into the Robb Archives Collection housed at El Progreso Memorial Library in Uvalde, Texas. For the Love of Uvalde has gone on to earn a coveted spot on the Yale Drama Series Short List. This distinction is bestowed by judge and Tony-nominated Broadway playwright Jeremy O. Harris who ranks the show in the top ten of over 2,000 international submissions.

Following landmark recognition, Urban Arts Collective has commissioned the opera adaptation of For the Love of Uvalde called For the Love of Uvalde: The Opera. The show is slated for a 2027 premiere, the year marking five years since the historic events upon which the show is based. Co-produced by Urban Arts Collective and TCU School of Music, the opera score is composed by internationally acclaimed composer and Classic FM Radio favorite Dr. Kevin Day (Concerto for Euphonium, Lalovavi) and features a libretto by Ayvaunn Penn.
